Andrea Benson and Roberta Lavadour
May 6-29, 2010
Please join us for an artists’ reception: First Friday, May 7, 2010, 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Andrea Benson – Hands and Minds
Andrea Benson presents new encaustic paintings with a show titled, Hands and Minds. With delicate luminous layers and subtle colors, Andrea’s figurative paintings explore hands, arms and stance in a world that is tenuous, tattered and resilient. These “handmaidens of the mind” reflect a mind imagined as individual, collective, cultural and environmental. Andrea’s paintings, created with encaustic, paper and drawing on wood panels, attempt a visual balance between entropy and repose. Preview Andrea’s show at: www.23sandy.com/benson/catalog.html
Roberta Lavadour – Finding Home
Roberta Lavadour’s new exhibition of hand bound artist books titled, Finding Home, brings years of cast-offs recovered from thrift stores and yard sales together to explore the language of the book. Roberta tells us that she has been living with these “parts and pieces” in her studio, allowing her subconscious to connect threads of texture, history and ideas until a route to the final binding structure becomes evident. Exploring ways to fashion the unfinished work of others into something finally “done” is a particularly satisfying process, and the finished books take on a new life, weaving each viewer’s experience into the mix.
